Theme 4 reflections

After this weeks theme I would say that I have not change my mind about what quantitative research is about. The lecture reconfirmed my understanding that quantitative research is, simply put, merely about the numbers. It is more to it than just numbers of course. Like how you gather, arrange and present the numbers in an objectively manner. According to the lecture we gather quantitative data by asking, measure or observing and then interpreting the collected data with the help of statistic tests. Further more we were presented with Illias report that we also had to read up on prior to the lecture and the seminar. I think that this part wasn’t that interesting at all or rather that the course is kind of misplaced in the course plan. The course is scheduled after we are done with our bachelor thesis and almost 1,5 years before our master thesis. This makes the course fail to be relevant, sadly enough. Once again I would say that the seminar didn’t delivered any hallelujah moment if any kind. In my group we literary had nothing more to say than to agree with each other’s thoughts we had prior to the week’s theme and then we started to chat about our bachelor theses. I would say that our talk about the theses was actually kind of interesting. At least for me.

  1. Hi,

judging from your preblog and your summary of last week's topic it's evident that you have extensive knowledge on empirical methods. I have also already conducted my own empirical research for my bachelor studies and therefore I found it interesting to hear about other students theses during the seminar. Since I originally studied media and communication science, I hoped to hear more about what the media technology students have done for their theses. I liked the journal article you chose, since I have worked within the field of CMC.

  2. An interesting reflection that I agree with. We already know what quantitative methods are. But although we have already written our bachelor's thesis, we will have to write more papers and most importantly the master's thesis. And if this course had gone more into the specifics of quantitative methods instead of doing this sort of re-introduction, it could perhaps have been more valuable for use in the future.

  3. Hi,
I think that you show pretty quick that you are aware of the different methods of this week, (quantitative and qualitative) and I hope that although you doesn't seem so happy with the course that you will have use of the thinks that we are reading and discussing later during your education. I would think that different arrangements of the seminars would be good instead of letting us just discuss in small groups. Anyway I think that you describe the some of the keywords in a good way and keep up the work these last weeks.

  4. Hi,
After three weeks of almost philosophical discussions, this week’s theme made a difference. It was easier to follow and understand, but not so easy to fire up an interesting discussion in our seminar. It seems you were not so satisfied this week, because you already have knowledge of this subject. But this course gave to me a deeper understand of quantitative and qualitative method and a different approach to learn about them. I think it will be very useful during our master programme and our master thesis.

  5. Short and clear summary, I agree with the notion of the difference with these already known facts versus the first weeks newer experiences. But maybe we can go in the fine details easier when we are already experienced in the subject? I must be in luck, haven't done my bachelor thesis yet so hopefully this might be useful!

  6. Hi, i also have some pre knowledge about quantitative and qualitative method and used both of them in my bachelor thesis. However, i still find something useful from the course which is how to design a questionnaire. I think this is very useful for my other course's project cause i was never design it before. Sometimes i think reviewing the old may give you some new points for that. I am sorry you said you are sadly after the course, i understood you want to get more useful knowledge. Do not be sad, i hope you will obtain some new points in the next theme.

  7. Hello !

We don't have the same system in France, so I wasn't in the same case as most of you guys - for the bachelor's thesis. However, I already had an okay understanding on the subject of quantitative and qualitative studies. I have to admit though that I was somehow biased in that understanding, and the lectures helped clear up this fact, so to me this was still kind of helpful as compared as your experience with this theme - and a lot of other people too, as I have read on other blogs.
One question I have in regards to your blog post is that you say quantitative research is related to "how you gather, arrange, and present the numbers in an objectively manner." As said in previous themes, the word "objective" is somehow tricky to use, especially in research or philosophy, because there's no real objectivity - or at least we can't achieve that. In that sense, because we are the ones gathering and arranging the numbers, objectivity can not be applied to the results we get, because we are biased and our point of view changes the discoveries of the research. We can somehow bend and break what we get, according to what we want to achieve. At least, that's my point of view…
Thanks for your thought provoking blog post !
